Doris Day - Que Sera Sera

Just to celebrate the successful overcoming of the multudious problems involved with setting up a new computer (three rebuilds to try and get my esoteric studio sound card to work...) I'm putting up a second post for today.

Before Doris Day (who, by the way, was born Doris van Kappelhoff) became a famous actress, she was a swing-band singer, and a pretty good one too.

This album provides a fine sampler of the vocal style and taste of dear Doris. Silky smooth - like a musical version of a midnight martini...

02 - Close Your Eyes
03 - It's Easy To Remember
04 - If I Give My Heart To You

Bert Kaempfert - Yesterday And Today

A piece of the later Bert today, and a pretty groovy one too. This a collection of six Bert originals, and six arrangements of fifties rhythm'n'blues hits hails from 1973 and showcases Bert's mature style. There's a sophistication to the arrangements that is missing from some of his earlier albums, but the trademark trumpets are still swingin' and that clipped bass sound is still in evidence.

BTW thanks to all the folks that have left comments - In particular Douglas from Paris who left a glowing comment (on the very first post) and of course that bon-vivant of the bloggoshere Lounge Tracks who kindly left instructions on how to prepare (and dispose of) a Velvet Martini - and I thought I just made it up...

Peggy Lee - Bewitching-Lee

Peggy Lee's alluring tone, distinctive delivery, breath of material and ability to write many of her own songs made her one of the most captivating artists of the vocal era, from her breakthrough on the Benny Goodman hit "Why Don't You Do Right" to her many solo successes, singles including "Manana" and "Fever." This 1962 release is the first of Lee's greatest hits albums.

Maurice Larcange - Weekend Musette

Don't be put off by the rather battered cover of this album. Maurice Larcange and his orchestra serve up a delightful slice of easy-listening a-la Francais. As I pointed out in a previous post, I am rather partial to the films of Jaques Tati. If the whimsical soundtracks of his movies are to your taste, then you will love this album. Plus, it has another version of 'Mon Oncle' to add to your collection...

Bert Kaempfert - Orange Coloured Sky

ORANGE COLORED SKY, surely one of Bert Kaempfert’s loveliest albums, was recorded in November 1970. The album was the first of his productions to use multi-track recording technique (eight sound tracks) and has everything that the name of Bert Kaempfert conjures up: his typical rhythm with its pithy bass, smooth-as-silk arrangements for strings and chorus, stereo-like entries of the winds from the right and left, and plenty of trumpet solos.

The six new compositions by the Bert Kaempfert and Herbert Rehbein team range from pleasantly easy-going numbers such as Tea And Trumpets and Friends and the more gentle While The Children Sleep to the shuffle of Wake Up And Live.

Also heard on this disc are new and old hits by other composers covering a time-span of 50 years. Bye Bye Blackbird and In Apple Blossom Time are typical “Tin Pan Alley” songs from the ‘20s: the latter was one of the most popular hits of its day and later a great success for the Andrew Sisters.

The title-number Orange Colored Sky, composed by the accordion-playing band-leader Milton DeLugg, became famous in the 1950s in vocal versions by Nat “King” Cole and Betty Hutton; Cracklin’ Rosie was Neil Diamond’s very first Number 1 hit in the 1970s; and the rock group Blood, Sweat & Tears landed in the Top 20 with Hi-De-Ho.

From The Bert Kaempfert Website

01 - Cracklin' Rosie
02 - My love
03 - Don't Go
04 - Tea And Trumpets
05 - Friends
06 - While The Children Sleep
07 - In Apple Blossom Time

Jake Concepcion - Sexy Saxes

I think it's time for a couple of "Instruments Behaving Badly" themed album covers...

The smouldering sax of Monsieur Jake belts out an array of standards accompanied, as the title points out, by his orchestra.

About Jake I can tell you little, except that he appeared as a sideman in a couple of Cantopop albums by Leslie Cheung. Perhaps one of our oh-so-knowledgeable readers has some more info...

King Records - Dynamic Sound Showcase

One of the advantages of living Down Under is that you come across records that haven't had a lot of exposure in other parts of the globe. Japanese label King records put together a couple of samplers for it 'Super Dynamic Stereo' recording process in the early 1970's. Curiously enough, the two records I came across each have the same side A, but different side B's.

I have combined the three sides into a single post to give you a taste of the Japanese lounge scene. And, let me tell you, some of these guys are hot. Nobuo Hara And His Sharps And Flats could give Enoch Light a run for his money IMHO, and the tracks where the SDS All Stars and Nobuo Hara team up are some of the fattest big band sounds I have heard. I am also a bit of a Jaques Tati nut, so the inclusion of the theme from 'Mon Oncle' is a definite bonus. All in all, well worth a listen.

01 - SDS All Stars - Bridge On The River Kwai (Interpolating Colonel Bogey)

Basil Henriques and the Waikiki Islanders

Remember this post from last month? If you downloaded it you would have heard a track by Basil Henriques, a laid-back Tiki version of 'Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You'.

Anyway to cut a long story short, Basil Henriques himself dropped by and left a comment on the post (and a complementary one at that).

Not only that, but Basil is still going strong, and his two Studio 2 albums have been re-released by EMI as a double album CD. So, why don't you drop by Basil's site and pick up a copy. At 10 quid for both albums it's a bargain. Mr Snookles has already ordered his copy...

Lounge Tracks - Triple Whammy

A special guest post today from our friend, the bon vivant and serial Martini abuser, Mr Lounge Tracks himself. Here's what he has to say...

Last week I spoke of some shares for you and yours, so as promised here goes. It's a 3-pack special the first -2- are by the one and only Bud Shank who's the fella playing the flute in the background on The Mama's & The Papa's immortal California Dreaming This is his album with the same name and also features Chet Baker on loan from the Mariachi Brass.

Girl In Love is the followup from '67 and continues the trend set by his hit album 2 years earlier entitled "Michelle" with the same girl on the cover. Incidently, if anyone out there has "Michelle" please post it as I'd love to hear it and can't find it in my neck of the woods.

And finally, a bit of a holy grail find from Si Zentner. It's his often seen, rarely heard, Swinging Eye! which, I gotta say, I find underwhelming. The cover gets lots of attention but to me, that's the best part, and I'm a fan of the guy!

That's it Mr. Snookles, thanks for the invite and remember to keep on lounging'!

Swingle Singers - Bach's Greatest Hits

Dooby-do and Papa-dah!. Ward Swingle and his singers turn their attention to the polyphonies of J.S. Bach, whose contrapuntal style is tailor-made for that distinctive Swingle style. A swung four beat on the drum kit keeps pace in the background, leading to the suggestion that this is a jazz record, though the lack of improvisation makes this debatable.

It don't mean a thingle if it ain't got that Swingle....

Al Caiola - Tuff Guitar Tijuana Style

A couple of months ago Mr Lounge Tracks and self were trading Al Caiola posts for the benefit of our readers. As LT beat me to the punch in uploading this album I refrained from posting my copy at the time. Sadly, LT's blog ended shortly after he upped the album, so some of you might have missed the opportunity to get your copy (ahhh, cyberspace is so ephemeral...)

Anyhoo, I have ripped and upped my copy, so if you missed it the first time around, here's your chance.

Shoji Yokoughi - Mr Guitar

Today's post is by talented Japanese guitarist Shoji Yokoughi aka Mr Guitar. When I first saw this album I almost passed on buying it because of the naff cover. I'm glad I yielded to my vinyl acquisition compulsion however, as the music is way better than the packaging. Think of the Charlie Byrd post 'Aquarius' of a couple of months ago, mixed with a little Louis Bonfa, and you're getting close. The album is a collection of tasty Latin numbers played on a classical guitar with some flair by Shoji san, artfully backed-up by his group The Blue Dreamers.

Monty Python - Another Monty Python Record

Mr Snookles is Up, Up and Away for the next two weeks, so no posts for a while. But dry your tears, gentle reader, and be uplifted by the pure absurdity of Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Ah yes, sit back in your comfy chair, unchain the spam, watch out for the rotating knives, and have a good old chuckle at some classic Pythonesque Humour.

Eric Coates - London Suite

We are delving into the world of the light classics today, with a post from the father of British light classical music Eric Coates.

What is Light Music? It is pleasant melodic music, less demanding of the listener and easier on the ear. It does not try to make any profound statements or push boundaries but is content simply to entertain, like the waltzes and polkas of the Strauss family. (from mFiles)

Most popular of Coates' pieces was the London Suite (1933). The last movement of this, "Knightsbridge", was used by the BBC to introduce their radio programme In Town Tonight. (Wikipedia)

Ena Baga - Happy Hammond Plays Bacharach and Beatles

More Hammond goodness today...

Born Rosina Baga in 1906, Ena started her musical career as an movie-house organist in the golden age of silent movies. In 1932 she was invited to Balmoral, where she improvised music for Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush for George V and Queen Mary.

In the 1960s, Baga played a Hammond organ at Joe Lyons's corner house on Tottenham Court Road, and later at the Jolly Blacksmith at Fulwell. Baga updated her repertoire to suit the 1960s, and the new Hammond electric organ, performing tunes such as Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. She once she gave Oscar Peterson a masterclass on how play for silent film scenes. (thanks Wikipedia)

In this two-album set you can hear her background as a theatre organist. Lacking the finesse of Klaus Wunderlich on the keys, she brings a robust enthusiasm and forcefulness that defines her style.

Grytpype: Neddie, Neddie, we've heard you play the organ and we don't think you have it.
Seagoon: Rubbish. Next to Reg Dixon I'm the greatest player in the world.
Moriarty: Nonsense, Ena Baga could play better than you.
Seagoon: I'd like to hear Ena Baga try it.
Moriarty: Little tone-deaf lad, I am an authority on organ playing. You haven't a hope in the world of becoming a great player.
Seagoon: What! (Sobs) Oh, what a terrible turribule shock, ten years I've studied organ playing in the Sahara and now... failure... and sunburn... I ask you... what can I do with my fifty-ton brass-bound organ?
Grytpype: May I make a suggestion?
Seagoon: (suspicious) What?

Tommy Dorsey - Tea For Two Cha Chas

After Tommy Dorsey's untimely death at age 51, trombonist Warren Covington assumed leadership of the band with, presumably, Jane Dorsey's blessing (she owned the rights to her late husband's band and name) and it produced, ironically enough, the biggest selling hit record ever released under the Dorsey name. Billed as the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra Starring Warren Covington, they topped the charts in 1958 with Tea For Two Cha-Cha. Covington led the Dorsey band through to 1970. (Thanks to Wikipedia)

Don Harper - Library Music

Double post today featuring the music of Don Harper. He wrote theme and background music for many programmes produced by BBC TV, including Dr Who, Champion House, Sexton Blake, Devil in the Fog, and The Inside Man. He held the position of Music Director for London Weekend Television's popular World of Sport and wrote all the music for this series for fifteen years. For more info see The Australian Music Centre.

Don Harper also had the rare distinction of lecturing in Jazz Studies at Wollongong University when Mr Snookles was a student there studying Musical Composition way back in the 1980's. It's nice to know one of us had a successful musical career!
