The Village Stompers - A Taste Of Honey

How do you describe the Village Stompers? Here's what the liner notes say...

Traditional jazz instrumentation - brass and winds, banjos and guitars - in modern Folk-Dixie dress. Real New Orleans spirit with a strong discotheque beat.

Sound like your cup of tea? In fact there's a varied menu of musical styles, though they do get a bit "Dixieish" at times. Curiously enough they remind me of the raga-rock style exemplified by Rajput and the Sepoy Mutiny, with the banjo sound reminiscent of the sitar...

James Last - Hammond A-Go-Go Vol 2

Because too much cheesy Hammond is never enough...

James Last, you either love him, hate him or are completely indifferent to him. I've been susceptible to all three during my lifetime, but at the moment I find myself curiously partial to his brand of cheesy lounge pop schmaltz. They're like the band you'd hire for your Bar Mitzvah...

Stan Getz - Big Band Bossa Nova

Following the last Black Orpheus post, I have decided to share the Stan Getz gem from 1962, which covers many of the songs from the film. Gary McFarland's arrangements give Stan plenty of room for his lyrical sax playing, whilst keeping a sense of the ensemble throughout each recording. Smooth, cool and swingin'.

Cole Porter - High Society

For musical fans, here's one of the best - Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly team up to sing a few famous Cole Porter songs accompanied by Louis Armstrong and his band.

In between deciding who wins the hand of the fair maiden, Bing and Frank croon, Satchmo growls and Grace swoons. Innocent fun from another age.

Art Blakey - The African Beat

Jazz, African rhythms and the limitless potential of the drum. As the Blue Note logo on the cover suggests this album was originally conceived as an America meets Africa jazz outing. Nowadays we can hear the exotica influences, and the album has lounge as well as jazz leanings.

Nonetheless this album is dominated by the drums, about 30 different bamburas, telegraph drums and so on. The ensembles does try to work as an ensemble, not a collection of soloists trying to outdo one another. There are some killer grooves and a nice fusion of African rhythms with jazz cool.
